With a population of nearly 20,000, White Rock is a bustling small community in the SW corner of the Lower Mainland. It is a member municipality of Metro Vancouver. The moderate climate has made it a haven for retirees who enjoy an average summer temperature of 23 degrees Celsius and an average winter temperature of 6 degrees Celsius.

Named for a large white 485-ton granite boulder that probably arrived on the beach through glacial movements millions of years ago, White Rock is also part of the Coast Salish people’s narrative.

According to one legend, a rock was hurled across the Strait of Georgia in honour of the bride of a young chief. He indicated that wherever the rock landed was where they would make a home together. The legend suggests that their descendants became the Semiahmoo First Nation.

Noted for its 1,500-foot pier that reaches out into Semiahmoo Bay, White Rock is also a wonderful community full of social opportunities and outdoor activities such as kayaking, swimming, and exploring tidal pools at low tide.

Cultural activities in White Rock include Arts, Dance, and Music, as well as a variety of sports-related events and clubs. There are numerous fitness centres and yoga classes in the community  for group or individual fitness sessions.

Everywhere there are bustling patio restaurants along Marine Drive and numerous boutiques and shops nestled together. You won’t find any drive-through restaurants in White Rock. It’s a drive-through-free community.

Further back from all this activity there are colourful, cliffside homes, and beyond them fast-growing areas of the city where coffee houses, wellness practitioners, and art galleries proliferate.

There are over 80 acres of parkland in White Rock and 15 parks at which you can enjoy the outdoors, one of which has an off-leash dog area (Ruth Johnson Park). A recreation guide is available online.

For those that travel frequently to the US for holidays or for shopping, the border crossing at Blaine, Washington, where the peace arch stands, is only minutes away, and Seattle is only 2 hours further.

White Rock has two primary schools of their own and four secondary schools (in association with Surrey). There are single family homes on small or estate lots, and even multiple family homes available, many with breathtaking ocean views.

Whether you are outdoor-inclined, or just appreciate the natural beauty of an oceanside community, sunsets in White Rock are almost impossible to beat!
